Carpentry Repairs for a 1990s Home Exterior
In August 2026, CertaPro Painters® of Austin, TX completed an extensive exterior carpentry and painting project for a 1990s-era home in Cedar Park, TX. During the initial estimate, the team discovered widespread wood rot affecting the home’s aging Masonite siding and pine trim boards. The homeowner was already aware that deterioration had become a significant issue and wanted a long-term solution rather than temporary repairs. The project called for removing the damaged materials, replacing them with new SMART siding and Hardie trim, and completing a full exterior repaint to give the home renewed protection and curb appeal.
SCOPE OF THE WORK:
Before painting could begin, CertaPro’s carpentry team carefully inspected all sides of the home to locate deteriorated siding and trim. Rotten materials were removed and replaced with new SMART siding and Hardie trim, providing a more durable foundation for the refreshed exterior. Once the carpentry work was complete, the team thoroughly caulked joints and transitions, spot-primed surfaces as needed, and applied two fresh coats of high-quality exterior paint across the entire home.
The scope went well beyond a typical exterior repaint. By addressing the underlying deterioration first, the team was able to restore compromised areas of the exterior rather than simply covering over existing problems.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:
One of the primary challenges was sourcing the correct SMART siding profile to ensure the replacement sections blended naturally with the remaining exterior. Matching the existing materials was essential to creating a consistent finished appearance instead of leaving the repaired areas visually obvious.
The chimney presented the most substantial carpentry challenge. Extensive deterioration required the team to completely rebuild the chimney exterior from ground level to above the second-story roofline. Careful carpentry and material installation restored this prominent architectural feature before the preparation and painting phases could proceed.

The Final Results
The completed project provided the home with much more than a new color and fresh coat of paint. Widespread rotten siding and trim were replaced, the chimney exterior was rebuilt, vulnerable joints were properly sealed, and the entire house received two new finish coats.
