Our Interior Painting Process

Most interior painting projects follow six core stages, with the details tailored to your home and approved scope.

Step 1 – Confirm Colors and Finishes

Before work begins, confirm the colors and finishes for the walls, ceilings, trim, doors, or other surfaces included in the project.

Your local team can discuss color-matching options, sheen levels, and available color-support services. Color consultation and visualizer availability may vary by location.

Step 2 – Protect the Work Area

The team prepares the room by protecting the floors, furniture, fixtures, and other areas not included in the painting scope.

Your project representative will explain what should be moved before the crew arrives and how larger furnishings will be handled.

Step 3 – Prepare the Surfaces

Surface preparation depends on the existing condition of the walls, ceilings, trim, and other areas being painted.

The approved scope may include patching minor holes or cracks, sanding selected areas, addressing loose paint, sealing stains, caulking previously sealed gaps, and priming specified surfaces.

Step 4 – Apply the Selected Paint

After preparation and applicable priming are complete, the team applies the coatings specified in the project plan.

The number of coats, application method, and drying time will depend on the surface condition, color change, selected products, and project requirements.

Step 5 – Clean the Work Area

After painting is complete, the team removes its materials, coverings, and project debris from the work area.

Discuss furniture placement, room access, ventilation, and expected drying time with your project representative before using the space normally.

Step 6 – Complete the Final Walkthrough

Review the completed areas with the Job Site Supervisor and identify any items that may require attention before the project is closed.

Your local team will also provide applicable project documentation and care instructions.

How Much Does Interior Painting Cost?

Interior painting costs depend on the areas being painted, their condition, the selected coatings, and the preparation required. A project-specific estimate provides a more useful price than a general room or square-foot average.

  • Room size and layout: Larger rooms, stairways, open layouts, and high ceilings can affect labor and equipment requirements.
  • Surface condition: Patching, sanding, stain sealing, repairs, or other preparation can change the scope.
  • Color and coating selections: Significant color changes, paint specifications, and finish selections may affect materials and coat requirements.
  • Included surfaces: Ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets, molding, and architectural details can add to the project.

When Should You Repaint Your Interior?

Paint condition, room use, and changing design preferences can all signal that it is time to evaluate your interior surfaces.

  • Fading or discoloration has changed the appearance of the room.
  • Scuffs, stains, or marks no longer clean up effectively.
  • Peeling, cracking, or uneven paint is visible on walls, ceilings, or trim.
  • Previous repairs or touch-ups have left noticeable differences in color or texture.
  • Existing colors no longer suit the room or the rest of the home.
  • A move, renovation, or property sale has created a reason to refresh the space.

A painting estimate can help identify which surfaces need preparation and which areas should be included in the project.

Interior Painting Questions

How much does it cost to paint a house interior?

Interior painting costs depend on the rooms and surfaces included, square footage, ceiling height, surface condition, preparation, color changes, number of coats, paint specifications, detail work, and local labor requirements. Request a project-specific estimate for pricing based on your home.

How long does an interior painting project take?

Timing depends on the number and size of the rooms, surface preparation, repairs, coat requirements, crew size, drying time, and access to the work areas. Your local team should provide an expected schedule before work begins.

Do I need to move furniture before the painters arrive?

Your project representative will explain what should be moved before the crew arrives. Small, fragile, valuable, or personal items should generally be removed from the work area. Arrangements for larger furniture should be confirmed before the project begins.

Can existing interior paint colors be matched?

Color-matching may be possible using an existing paint record, leftover paint, or a sample from the surface. Differences in age, fading, sheen, application, and the original product can affect how closely new paint matches the existing finish.

Can wall or trim damage be repaired before painting?

Many independently owned and operated CertaPro Painters® businesses can complete certain non-structural repairs, such as patching selected drywall damage or addressing minor trim issues. Capabilities vary by location and the extent of the damage.

Can I remain home during interior painting?

That depends on the rooms being painted, ventilation, product specifications, household needs, and your comfort level. Discuss room access, pets, children, ventilation, drying time, and any sensitivities with your local team before work begins.
